What to Expect at Your First Visit

A dentist reviews a chairside scan with a seated patient

Before you even sit down

A first visit sets the tone for everything that follows, so we try to remove as much uncertainty from it as we can. Here's what to expect, step by step — and a few things worth bringing with you.

  • Your insurance card and a photo ID, if you have coverage.
  • A list of any medications you're currently taking.
  • Notes on any dental anxiety or past experiences you'd like us to know about.

If you want an outside perspective before you come in, the American Dental Association publishes a plain-language guide to what a routine exam should include.

What actually happens in the room

A first appointment, step by step

  1. 1

    Check-in & paperwork

A quick review of your health history and insurance, usually five to ten minutes.

  2. 2

    Digital X-rays & exam

Low-radiation digital imaging plus a full visual exam of teeth, gums, and bite.

  3. 3

    Cleaning

A thorough cleaning if your schedule and health history allow one the same day.

  4. 4

    The conversation

We walk through anything we found and build a plan together — nothing starts without your sign-off.

What to bring

Your insurance card and photo ID speed up check-in considerably — we verify benefits before you're ever in the chair, so there are no surprise costs later.

Digital X-rays use a fraction of the radiation of older film, and we only take what the exam calls for.
The best first visit is the one where nothing turns out to be a surprise.

How long it actually takes

Plan for sixty to seventy-five minutes for a first visit — longer than a routine cleaning, because we're building a full picture of your dental history for the first time. Rushing this part tends to cost more time later.

Calm, thorough, and nobody rushed me through it — by the end I actually understood my own treatment plan for once.

If you're anxious about the dentist

Tell us up front — we can adjust pacing, offer nitrous oxide, or just talk you through each step before it happens. You are not the first person to put this off.

If you're booking on behalf of a child rather than yourself, we've written a separate guide to a kid's first visit that covers what's different.
